Are you still around, Semi-Retired? Did you develop your fanzine project at all since back then? I'd love to see it if you did.

I'm still around.  I got pretty far but suffered a computer crash.  I have notes and early drafts that I can dig out and expand.  I will do so at some point in the near future.  Instead of a zine I'll probably just go with individual articles/posts.

Added 43 new monsters.

Nice! You can never have too many monsters.

I have some down time coming up at work and some people interested in playing so I printed out 10 copies each of the character sheet and airship record sheet.  Fingers crossed for a smooth game.

I never really thought about these.  Just having a list is helpful.  Do you have any other lists?

I've actually got brainstorming notes on several lists and I'm working on fleshing them out.  I'm planning on adding reference footnotes to many of the entries that might list ideas like "what page is the book open to?", "what does the key unlock?", "the page ripped from the book has a magical recipe, new spell, etc.".

Here's a list of prompts that I'm working on to help me when I'm working on an adventure for my campaign or I need to wing it.  This list is not exhaustive and is only bate ideas; the details still need to be fleshed out.

In/On a Desk
1. A stack of blank parchment.
2. A quill & ink.
3. Key (one or multiple on a ring).
4. Loose coins.
5. A map.
6. Crumpled up parchment.
7. Page ripped from a book.
8. Sealing wax & stamp.
9. Letter opener.
10. Reading glasses.
11. Candle.
12. Magnifying glass.
13. Measuring tape.
14. Wax-sealed parchment.
15. Personal journal.
16. A sketch of....
17. Charcoal stick.
18. Ink vials (empty or full).
19. A ring.
20. An open book.

It's still up to me to fill in the details whenever I use this list.  Is the item magical or of the everyday type?  Is it cheap or expensive?  Does it give hints?  What?

I know this has been done before but I came into my head and O just wanted to get it out.  I'm going to tighten it up a bit and put the info in a PDF with expanded notes.  Are there any glaring omissions?  Do you have anything similar?

There are some ideas that are obvious for use in a fanzine.  Character options - race, order, flaws, edges, equipment, magic, etc. - in addition to the ones included in the core rules are pretty much in any gaming fanzine.  Other ideas include:

* adventure seeds

* NPCs, monsters, etc.

* ideas on using rules in a new genre (ghost-busting, sci-fi, etc)

So, what else would you like to see in a fanzine devoted to PJ Fantasy and SteamCraft?  Have I overlooked anything?

I'm assembling articles and ideas for a fanzine devoted to Perilous Journeys Fantasy RPG and SteamCraft.  My question is simple - do you want each issue to be focused on one game only OR should the focus de split between both games each issue?

I'll probably start out as bimonthly or quarterly until I get a good surplus of articles built up.  The goal is a free one or two page PDF somewhat reminiscent of the old Roleplayer magazine from Steve Jackson Games.

Good advice. I'll keep that in mind as I move forward.  Off to decide whether to give the gore attack an effect (maybe stun opponent for a short time) or to increase the damage...

How humanoid versus giant do you want it to be?  Right now, the strength is close to A Goblin Warrior Warrior: H: 51-70 A: 53-65 S: 42-48 AF: 12.  An Orge has H: 110-121 A: 66-75 S: 45 AF: 10.

I would probably try to place the Minotaur in between these things and perhaps add some extra damage or effect to being gored.

Interesting.  I was going for third place when it comes to Ogre, Troll, and Minotaur. I have some wiggle room so I can definitely bump up health a tad bit.  I often mistake Agility for just stuff like gymnastics, sneaking, etc. but for PJ monster entries Agility is weapons ability so I will keep that in mind.  How does this look?

H: 65-80 A: 56-65  S: 40-45
Change gore to 1d12 (because it sounds like something "more heroic" to overcome) and, honestly, I'm terrible at coming up with special effects quickly.
What do you think now?

I think that might be closer.

H: 60-70  A: 3645  S: 40  AF: 6
Attack: weapon +4/1d8/1d6

Encountered: 1-4

Description: Minotaurs appear to be large humanoid creatures with the head of a bull.  They are typically around 7 feet tall with a thick, rugged build.  Rumors speak of Minotaurs living on a diet consisting of humans and other smaller humanoid races.  Minotaurs are somewhat intelligent and may use tools and weapons.

Comat: Minotaurs tend to charge their opponents in an attempt to gore them for 1d8 damage; when closed to grappling distance a Minotaur may bite for 1d6 damage.  Some Minotaurs prefer to use weapons such as spears, clubs, or axes and get a +4 bonus to damage when doing so.  Minotaurs tend to attack things smaller than their size.  Minotaurs may be wearing a ragtag mix of garments for armor in addition to their tough hide and have an effective armor factor of 6 points.

Treasure: C

That's my first impression of the Minotaur.  Any input or suggestions?

This thread is reserved for the discussion of new monsters that would fall into the humanoid category.  This thread is considered a work in progress that will continue to be updated until the stats are "right".  Some possibilities include the following.

Kobolds resemble small dog-faced humanoids.
Minotaurs appear to be large, burly humans with the head of a bull.
Neanderthals are an evolutionary throwback from a more primitive age.
Sasquatches have the general appearance of some mixture of man and ape.

Here's a list of possibilities...

Death Knight
Elentmental (air, earth, fire, water)
Vampire (lesser and master)

I just got home from a night of work so any mistakes or duplications on this list can be chalked up to fatigue.   8)

Let me double check and get back to you with some ideas.  I had several suggestions/ideas I planned to work on at one time.  I never got around to it because I was waiting for second edition.  It may take a day or two but I will provide that list with any new ideas...

For real, the changes sound fascinating to me.

SteamCraft RPG / New Creatures?
« on: June 21, 2015, 06:32:33 PM »
Who has new creatures to share?  I have a few I'm working on now.

I think some sort of gargoyle or minotaur would be great additions.  Maybe a gargoyle that looks like a traditional statue that activates when someone crosses a certain point in their path.  It could be a hallway with a certain set of tiles that are pressure activated or something similar.  A close clockwork minotaur as a roaming guard might work well also.

More ideas and creature stats coming soon...
